What is a Turnaround Arts School?

Turnaround Arts is a national school improvement program that was created in 2011 by the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities, in coordination with the White House, the U.S. Department of Education and several other foundations. It is now a program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts designed to bring high quality arts integration, educational programming and resources to struggling and underperforming high-poverty elementary and middle schools across the country. It is the first federal program to specifically utilize arts education as an improvement tool to transform schools that are facing some of the toughest challenges in the country.

In 2020, Turnaround Arts currently works in 70 schools, 34 districts, and 12 states and the District of Columbia. Extensive information is available here: http://turnaroundarts.kennedy-center.org/

Turnaround Arts services schools that are approved through an application process, and identify in the lowest five percent of the state for academic performance. The schools are working hard to close the achievement gap and believe that the arts are a critical tool for that transformation.  The MN based schools are partnered with Turnaround Arts: MN, which is now run through the Minnesota Department of Education, and funded through monies from the U.S. and Minnesota governments. Extensive information from the MN partnership is available here: https://education.mn.gov/MDE/dse/stds/Arts/turn/index.htm
