Welcome to the Bethune Media Center

My name is Desiree Hyrkas. I am so excited to be at Bethune for another year! I have been a Media Specialist since 2005 and at Bethune since 2012. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in German and a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science, with a focus on School Library Media.

My hope is to pass on a love of reading and of technology to my students.  I believe that students need to be familiar with many different types of technology in order to succeed today. My goal is to introduce students to how technology can be used as a tool to help them in many areas of their lives.  It is also my goal to teach information literacy skills. It is important that people evaluate the information they find on the Internet and in books to determine if it is true.

I see most classes once a week. Students in grades 1-5 can have up to three books checked out at a time, but should always keep at least one book in their classroom or in their locker. Kindergarten students start with one book to be kept in their classroom at the start of the year and will be taking one book home by the end of the year. Books can be kept for up to two weeks. When students bring their previous books back, they may find new books to check out. If you have any questions about checking out books or the Media curriculum, please contact me at desiree.hyrkas@mpls.k12.mn.us
